NEOS Expands Facility to Support Growth

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems, Inc. (NEOS) announced today that they have expanded in their facility to 14,000 square feet. Todd Stolberg, Chief Operating Officer at NEOS, had this to say about the expansion, "We are extremely pleased that we have been able to do this expansion within the same location. We moved from our original location into this larger facility back in 2009. It is fortunate that this additional space recently became available. With the growth we have experienced in 2014, and with the backlog we now have going into 2015, the additional space is required to support our growing business. Modifications in the production area to support our expansion will be done in December that will allow us to hit the ground running the first of the year."


In addition to the facility expansion, NEOS has hired 5 new full time employees. According to Peter Kornik, the director of business development at NEOS, this decision was not made lightly. "We have been talking extensively with our customers, as well as looking hard at our forecast, and have determined that these moves are essential to supporting our business. Managing growth is vital to a small company, especially when working with prime contractors and government agencies. We want to maintain the versatility of a small company while complying with government regulations and the quality standards of the defense industry. This expansion and the new hires will allow us to do just that."

NEOS Zoom Lens to be Used at Super Bowl XLVIII

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - The Associated Press reported that an infrared camera will be used at this weekend"s playoff game in preparation for use at the Super Bowl. The camera will be a FLIR 8300 using a New England Optical Systems, Inc. (NEOS) MWIR 6x Continuous Zoom Lens. As reported by AP, it will use this weekend"s NFC title game in Seattle between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seahawks to test an infrared camera that will show how players" body temperatures change throughout the game.


"I don"t know what story that tells, but it might make for some pretty cool pictures," Eric Shanks, Fox Sports chief operating officer and executive producer, told the Television Critics Association on Monday.

NEOS Further Expands Its ESS Capability

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced that they have expanded their capability to perform Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) in house.


"Investing in this type of capital equipment is key to the growth of our company.", stated Todd Stolberg, Chief Operating Officer for New England Optical Systems. "Our customers have demanding requirements for products to operate in harsh environments. Performing these tests in house provides the confidence and reliability our customers need. This expanded capability also alleviates much of our customers testing burden."


The recent additions include a shaker table (from LDS), a third automated ESS thermal chamber (from Envirotronics), and an additional production infrared interferometer (from M3 Measurement Solutions).

NEOS Hires Mechanical Engineer Ian Prees

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced the hiring of Ian Prees as a senior mechanical engineer. Ian will be responsible for the design and development of opto-mechanical and electro-optical systems. He comes to NEOS from General Dynamics Global Imaging Technologies, and has worked in the infrared imaging industry for over twenty (20) years. With his experience in opto-mechanical design, he will support current programs and be integral to continued growth as a key member of the NEOS team.

NEOS Receives Order for Significant Number of Long Range IR Zoom Lenses

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced that they have been awarded a contract from a prime contractor to the various U.S. government agencies for a significant number of long range infrared zoom lens systems.


"This is the exact type contract we have been working for since starting the company.", stated Todd Stolberg, Chief Operating Officer for New England Optical Systems. "We have worked very hard on developing this lens for surveillance applications. It will provide the user the ability to see further and with more detail than ever before."


Details of the contract have not been released; however NEOS has expanded its operation to support the program. This includes an increase in staff, as well as capital investment in testing equipment for both optical and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS).

New England Optical Systems to Exhibit at DSS (Booth #703)

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems (NEOS) will be exhibiting at the 2012 SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing (DSS) conference April 24th, 26th. At this years event, NEOS shall be showcasing more of its Infrared Zoom Lenses for both MWIR and LWIR cameras. Applications range from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Remote Weapon Stations (RWS), Border Surveillance, and multi-spectral gimbal payloads. NEOS will also be presenting their capabilities for infrared collimators which support infrared scene projection.

New England Optical Systems Achieves "Architect" Status on Sloan Digital Sky Survey III

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced that they have been awarded the status of "Architect" in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), by the SDSS-III Management Committee. NEOS shall be listed alongside other Architects on the wiki-page of the SDSS-III Collaboration Council.


"It is an honor to be recognized for our contributions to the SDSS-III", stated Greg Fitzgerald, Chief Technical Officer for New England Optical Systems. "It has been a privilege to collaborate with the SDSS-III team, and see the APOGEE optical assembly integrated into the final system."


APOGEE is an acronym for Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, and is one of four systems that make up the SDSS-III instrument. The APOGEE lens assembly was built and delivered by New England Optical Systems, which has an aperture of approximately 16 inches. The system was delivered to the University of Virginia, and will be ultimately installed at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.

New England Optical Systems Hires Optical Test Technician, Troy Bosman

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced the hiring of Troy Bosman as Optical Test Technician. Troy will be responsible for the testing of optical systems utilizing interferometers, auto-collimators and imaging cameras. Bosman"s previous experience in the optics laboratory will greatly benefit New England Optical Systems.


"We are excited to have Troy join our team, as he will make an immediate impact on our productivity," said Chief Operating Officer Todd Stolberg. "With the growth New England Optical Systems has had this year, Troy"s skillset will allow us to meet the needs of the customer. We have high expectations of Troy as NEOS continues to grow."


Bosman joins NEOS from the University of Florida, where he held the position of Research Assistant. While at the University of Florida, he was responsible for the management and organization of the optics lab, and performed optical measurements using a variety of metrology equipment. He was employed at the University for 2 years, prior to joining NEOS. Bosman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the University of Florida, and an Associate"s Degree in Math, Science and Technology from Daytona Beach State.

Optical Component Fabrication at New England Optical System

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems (NEOS) has announced that its single point diamond turning facility is now operational. "The addition of this capability will allow us to control costs on volume production jobs, and will help NEOS to be more responsive on prototype builds." says NEOS Chief Operating Officer, Todd Stolberg. "We now have the capability to fabricate optical elements out of germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, and zinc sulfide, as well as aluminum reflective optics. We may add more materials in the future, but these are the most common material types used in our optical designs." NEOS will be using their diamond turning capability to support their optical assembly programs, however, plan on offering this as a service in the near future. New England Optical Systems Awarded Dual Band Collimator Contract from AFRL

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems (NEOS) has been awarded a contract to develop a dual band, mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long wave infrared (LWIR), ambient collimator system for the Air Force Research Laboratory Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW). The collimator will be delivered to Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, and installed in the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-loop Simulator (KHILS) facility. The NEOS ambient collimator will be an all refractive design which will image in both wavebands of interest.

Previous NEOS Collimator

The NEOS ambient collimator is required to test and characterize the Optimized Array for Space background IR Simulation (OASIS) 1024 infrared scene projector (IRSP). The OASIS 1024 IRSP is a state-of-the-art IRSP being developed by Santa Barbara Infrared (SBIR) to support the hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing of spaced based interceptors. OASIS is the only IRSP capable of operation to cryogenic temperatures, and is being developed in a 1024 x 1024 pixel format. The NEOS ambient collimator will be used during anneal to stabilize the arrays. Additionally, the collimator will be used to characterize arrays by measuring rise/fall times and droop.

New England Optical Systems Appoints Peter Kornik Director of Business Development

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Optical Systems Inc. (NEOS) today announced the appointment of Peter Kornik as director of Business Development. Peter will be responsible for the development of new customers in all segments of NEOS business including ISR systems, combat systems, test systems, commercial systems, and astronomical instrumentation. Kornik"s twenty years of experience in the optics industry will greatly benefit New England Optical Systems.


"Peter brings the right mix of technical knowledge and industry experience to NEOS that we believe will best support our customers, and is an asset to our growing company," said Chief Operating Officer Todd Stolberg. Kornik joins NEOS from the Axsys Technologies division of General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, where he held the position of Vice President of Sales and Marketing. While at Axsys he managed all sales and marketing efforts for the optical systems group, which equated to approximately $150MM in sales. He was employed at Axsys for 5 years. Prior to Axsys, Kornik worked 8 years at Janos Technology in sales, and the previous 7 years at United Lens Company and OPCO Laboratory in manufacturing. Kornik earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Central New England College, and is currently pursuing a business degree from Franklin Pierce College.
